Residential Storm Debris at Transfer Station - Emergency Measures - In the aftermath of the ice storm emergency which began on December 11, 2008, in order to accommodate the disposal of storm debris on residential properties, the following plan has been developed: Disposal of residential property storm debris will be allowed at the Transfer Station brush/compost area at no cost until the close of business on Tuesday, December 30, 2008. Normal brush dumping fees will apply after that date-- $55 per pick up truck load. Disposal will be allowed during normally scheduled business days-- Tuesdays and Thursdays, 12 noon to 7 PM and Saturdays 8 AM to 5 PM  Additionally, the Transfer Station will open for storm debris disposal only from 8 AM to 4 PM on the following days: Wednesday, December 17; Friday, December 19; Wednesday, December 24; and Friday, December 26. No trash or recycling will be allowed during these additionally scheduled days. No Contractors will be allowed to dispose of storm debris at the Transfer Station.

ROAD CUT APPLICATIONS: No road cut permits will be issued, and no road surface may be cut, between November 15 and April 1. 
WINTER PARKING BAN: Winter Parking Ban goes into effect November 15 and continues through April 15. The ban is in effect from 1:00 a.m. to 6:00 a.m.  

ROADWAY IMPROVEMENT PLAN: To address the condition of local roads in Littleton, the Board of Selectmen voted on March 10, 2008 to support an $8-million roadway improvement plan, which would be funded inside the property tax levy limit, without any overrides of Proposition 2 1/2.  Read more.

$4.2-Million in TIP Funding for Goldsmith Street. On June 26, 2008, the Boston Region Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO)'s Transportation Planning and Programming Committee formally adopted amendments to the Federal Fiscal Year 2008 TIP (Transportation Improvement Plan) which includes $4.2-million for Goldsmith Street, Littleton. The Committee had given initial approval at its meeting on May 22, 2008, which then triggered a required 30-day public comment period. With the action on June 26th, that funding is officially in place.  The project consists of improvements to Goldsmith Street from the intersection with Route 2A/110 to the intersection with Shaker Lane, a distance of approximately 1.45 miles. Sidewalk and landscaping improvements will also be provided. The total project cost is $5.2-million, of which $1-million will be paid by the Town through the funds unanimously approved by the May 5, 2008 Special Town Meeting. The project has been put out to bid by the Massachusetts Highway Department.  See bid documents (large PDF file - 17 MB). The projected project start date is the Spring of 2009.

STATE ROADS IN LITTLETON:  The major highways in Littleton (Routes 119, 2A, 110, 495, 2) and Powers Road are under the jurisdiction of Massachusetts Highway Department.  Any questions or concerns regarding these roads should be directed to the District 3 Office of the Massachusetts Highway Department, 508-929-3800.  

 

Highway Department Services

The Highway Department provides maintenance and improvements to approximately 62 miles of Town roads; operates the Transfer Station located on Spectacle Pond Road, administers contracts for the disposal of solid wastes, maintains approximately 62 acres of municipal recreational facilities and public grounds; performs public shade tree removals, trimming and planting (Highway Superintendent also serves as Tree Warden); and maintains the Department's equipment to accomplish the assigned tasks.

The Highway Department consists of twelve (12) full-time employees; two (2) part-time Transfer Station Operators and  summer help. The Department has at its disposal approximately 50 major pieces of equipment with attachments (etc.) with a value of $2 million to accomplish its work. The amount of equipment used by the Highway Department is a result of the variety of types of work undertaken.
